Pete Lane, now in his 80s, who went to Ballindereen national school, spent most of his busy working life ‘on his knees thinning beet’. He had a friend Tommy Staunton from Lough Cutra, who had fought in World War I. Before Tommy went ‘over the top’ he was delighted when each soldier was handed a ‘little glass of brandy’. After which, Tommy claimed, you had no fear in the world. One day they were fighting the Germans, and managed to drive them out of their trenches. There they found a boiler of tea. It was still warm. The men settled down for a good cuppa but the officer warned them that the tea might be poisoned. Nobody cared if it was poisoned or not. ‘We were so exhausted an killed out’ that they enjoyed the break while the fighting continued.

The Aldi Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards took place in Citywest Hotel and Conference Centre recently where over 2300 young people from throughout Ireland showcased their work in the community. 204 groups took part in the awards with projects covering topics such as equality; homelessness; mental health; culture and much more.

Galway Food Festival attracts eighty thousand visitors

The sixth annual Galway Food Festival, which took place over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, welcomed a record-breaking 80,000 visitors to Galway, with thousands attending the many in-house tasting events, food tours, food talks, the open air market at Fishmarket Square, Halla Bia at the former Connacht Tribune Print Works, and Breaking Bread on Easter Monday.

Local musical protégée Richard Hughes neatly combines his Westport 250 celebration with the rediscovery of Westport composer Jane Anne MacDonnell in a gala fundraising evening at Westport Town Hall. The programme includes Jane Anne MacDonnell’s Quadrilles, the premiere of Richard Hughes composition celebrating Westport 250 and music by Mozart and Haydn. The entire proceeds of the night are in aid of the Town Hall. This exceptional musical evening takes place on Easter Sunday, April 16, at 8pm.
